Even though it’s illegal to post fake reviews online, there’s a big industry out there that helps companies do that. Companies that want to appear more credible can buy fake reviews – or write their own – to boost their rating and lure customers in with fake recommendations.
While websites that host reviews, such as Google Maps and Amazon, say they remove millions of objectionable posts, experts say the problem has proven to be persistent.
The Federal Trade Commission is looking into new rules that could crack down on the fake reviews. The New York Times likes to hear from readers who may have come across fake reviews online, especially if they led to a purchase that didn’t live up to expectations.
