A theatrical performance of the musical “The Bodyguard” was halted when spectators chanting loudly about the show’s star had to be kicked out.
The musical “The Bodyguard,” featuring hit songs by Whitney Houston, had to be stopped 10 minutes before it ended when two women were removed from the Palace Theatre, one of the main theaters in Manchester, North West England, Sky News reports.
According to Sky News, six police officers were on the scene.
Videos on social media has the spectators raving about the iconic song ‘I Will Always Love You’.
Former Pussycat Dolls star actor Melody Thornton, who stars in “The Bodyguard”, apologized to fans in an Instagram post after the incident, saying the disruptive element was not “respectful”.
Thornton had to stop singing the big closing number twice due to the rowdy crowd screaming and singing, reports said.
Later footage shows people chanting “out, out, out,” then applauding loudly as the disruptive spectators are escorted out of the theater.
One person wrote on Twitter“Went to The Palace Theater in Manchester to see ‘The Bodyguard’ and a bunch of right-wing jerks started singing about the lead during the last song. A riot broke out, the show was canceled and the police were called.”
The incident has sparked discussions about audience behavior at musicals, with a number of people flocking to social media to say singing about professional performers is disrespectful.
Last week, a survey by Britain’s Broadcasting, Entertainment, Communications, and Theater Union found that 90% of its members engaged in anti-social behaviour, often from drunk theatergoers.
Mass brawls, violent assaults and people urinating in emergency exits were some examples of unacceptable behavior that theater staff said they experienced.
According to The Guardian, 70% believed the problem has worsened since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Performer and TikToker Catherine Cornwall made a video expressing her frustration with noisy audiences.
Cornwall said, “Do you have any idea how hard it is to try to keep in time and stay in time when you’re singing, and there are 50 drunk people singing the words wrong and out of tune?”
