WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump called on Friday to appoint a special public prosecutor to investigate the 2020 elections won by Democrat Joe Biden, and repeated his unfounded claim that the match was affected by widespread fraud.
“Biden was a coarse incompetent and the 2020 elections was a total fraud!” Trump said in a social media post in which he also tried to favor his approach to immigration enforcement with that of the former president. “The evidence is huge and overwhelming. A special public prosecutor must be appointed. This cannot be allowed again in the United States of America! Let the work start!”
The function of Trump, made as his Republican White House, is consumed by a huge substantial decision of foreign policy on whether he should be directly involved in the Israel-Iran War, is part of a reinforced effort by him to undermine the legitimacy of Biden's presidency. Earlier this month, Trump commissioned his administration to investigate Biden's actions as president, claiming that assistants masked the 'cognitive decline' of his predecessor. Biden has rejected the investigation as 'merely distraction'.
De Post also revives a long-term complaint from Trump that the elections were stolen, although courts throughout the country and a Trump-Procurer-General from his first term did not find any proof of fraud that the outcome could have influenced. The cyber security arm of the Department of Homeland Security stated the elections “The most secure in American history”.
It was unclear what Trump had in mind when he called for a special public prosecutor, but in the case of Attorney General Pam Bondi watches his call, she can be under pressure to name someone who has already been confirmed by the Senate. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice refused to comment on Friday.
In recent years, the Ministry of Justice has appointed a succession of special advice – sometimes, although not always picked from outside the agency – to lead research into politically sensitive matters, including in behavior by Biden and by Trump.
Last year the personal lawyers of Trump launched an aggressive and successful challenge for the appointment of Jack Smith, the special counselor who has been assigned to investigate his efforts to undo the 2020 presidential election and his preservation of classified documents on his MAR-A LAGO estate, Florida. A judge appointed by the Trump agreed and ruled that the then Attorney General Merrick Garland had exceeded its limits by appointing a public prosecutor without approval and confirmation of the Senate and the case rejected.
That legal team included Todd Blanche, who is now deputy attorney general, as well as Emil Bove, who is the best deputy of Blanche, but recently nominated to serve as a judge for a federal court of appeal.
