The ex-president has expressed his support for the new golf competition funded by Saudi investors.
Photos taken Thursday morning show former President Donald Trump participating in the LIV Golf pro-am at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
Trump played in the summer heat with his son, Eric, and professional LIV golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson.
The president, an avid fan of the sport, has made several statements in support of the newly established LIV Golf tour, which is being funded by Saudi Arabian donors. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, he said the tournament has been a great investment for the country and has generated a lot of publicity.
“I think LIV has been a great thing for Saudi Arabia, for Saudi Arabia’s image,” Trump said. “I think from that point of view it’s going to be an incredible investment, and that’s more valuable than a lot of other things, because you can’t buy that β not even with billions of dollars.”
LIV Golf has been criticized by advocacy groups who claim the new competition is akin to “sports washing,” and that the Saudi government is trying to whitewash its image and reputation with the new golf competition.
The National Press Club reprimanded LIV Golf and Trump in a statement.
“Having the tournament at a track owned by former President Trump is, if possible, even more abhorrent,” the statement said. βIt reminds us that the former president boasted of distracting Congress from the assassination, delaying the publication of the final US administration report concluding that MBS, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia (and recipient of President Biden’s punch) was most likely involved in planning and authorizing Jamal’s assassination.”
Two of LIV Golf’s 12 events will be held at Trump properties, including this week in Bedminster and an October event in Miami.
