INDIANAPOLIS — In response to a tweet Wednesday morning about a Minnesota state bill that would require menstrual products in the restrooms of boys’ schools, Tony Dungy mocked via Twitter.
“That’s nothing,” the former Indianapolis Colts coach tweeted at 9:38 a.m. Wednesday. “Some school districts place litter boxes in school restrooms for students who identify as cats. Very important to meet the needs of each student.”
At 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dungy had deleted his litter box tweet in response to a Daily Wire video Minnesota State Representative Sandra Feist advocates for menstrual products in the restrooms of boys’ schools.
“We need to make sure students have toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and plasters, and we need to make sure students have menstrual products as well,” Feist told the House Education Policy Committee in the video last week. “Not all students who menstruate are female.”
Dungy’s response sparked some outrage when the “myth” of the litter box was debunked months ago after it was spread by politically conservative types who oppose LGBTQ+ rights and gender nonconformity.
IndyStar reached out to Dungy, but didn’t get an immediate response.
An NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl champion turned television analyst, Dungy is known for his Christian faith and often conservative views, especially on social values. His last tweet got almost 140,000 views and many comments.
“Tony Dungy is spreading rampant conspiracy theories here,” the DeadSpin article headlined on Dungy’s tweet.
Dungy has also been roasted, and rightly so, by Cyd Zeigler on Out Sports for his continued opposition to same-sex marriage,” DeadSpin wrote after Wednesday’s tweet was deleted. “In the past, Dungy once called openly gay SEC Defensive Player of the Year Michael Sam ‘a distraction’ (then tried to walk back) and has publicly aligned himself with anti-gay individuals and organizations.”
Dungy, an adoption and foster care advocate and national spokesperson for All Pro Dad, a fatherhood program that helps men manage their families, told IndyStar in 2018 “Having both a mother and a father in the picture is the best way to raise children.
“That’s how God set up the plan for families,” Dungy said.
