TikTok sketch shows the difference between Asian-American and Asian responses to cultural appropriation

    A TikTok video about the difference in reactions between Asian Americans and Asians regarding cultural appropriation has gone viral.

    Read choicewho has more than 4.5 million followers on TikTok, uploaded a video on Thursday highlighting how Asian Americans react differently to foreigners wearing traditional Korean clothing than to Asians.

    In the video, Choi pretends to be a foreigner wearing a hanbok.

    Choi responds like an Asian American, saying, “Are you wearing a Hanbok? That’s cultural appropriation. Stop colonizing my culture. That’s insulting.”

    Contrary to the seemingly outraged reaction, Choi goes on to portray how a person who grew up in Asia might react.

    “Wow, it looks so good. You look so handsome. You did a good job. Very cool!” Choi says in Korean.

    “Maybe…they appreciate the culture, and we shouldn’t blame them for not knowing our entire history?” Choi wrote in the description of the post.

    The video has since been viewed nearly a million times and over 170,000 likes, and viewers agreed with the reality of Choi’s sketch.

    “This one! I have a Japanese kimono that I got as a gift, but I’m white and can’t even wear it,” explains one user. to blame and make me sad. It sits in my closet collecting dust because I have no heart to throw it away, but refuse to wear it.”

    “When I was [in] Seoul, I woke up a Hanbok and all the grannies said I was really beautiful,” said another viewer.

    “Facts. The same goes for Africans and African Americans. I think our experiences are different,” commented one person.

    “Transracial” Influencer Oli London responded to the post with two smiling emojis, prompting one user to reply, “Oli, you’re the problem here.”
