The can thrower said he stuck to a Houston Astros tradition of throwing beers at athletes.
The man who threw a can of White Claw at Texas Senator Ted Cruz said he tried to throw a drink at the Senator, implying that he wanted the politician to drink the drink.
On Thursday, Joey Arcidiacono’s attorney issued a… pronunciation explaining that Arcidiacono had no intention of carrying out a political attack on Cruz.
“Instead, this was an Astros fan who tried to throw drinks from his cooler at the Senator during a championship parade and didn’t realize how this would be taken until he saw the response from security,” the statement said.
The statement said Astros athletes often drank beer that their fans threw at them. “Fans are throwing cans at people in championship parades all the time. That’s common knowledge. To make them chug,” it read.
“That was stupid, fun. This didn’t end up being so fun,” the statement also reads.
The night before the parade, Arcidiacono texted a friend that his “dream would be to get one of the players a beer,” the statement said.
Arcidiacono apologized to Cruz, his family and his security service, asking the senator “for mercy” and refusing charges against him.
The statement ended with, “GO ASTROS, CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!”
Cruz was filmed getting hit by the booze while attending an Astros victory parade on Monday. Police said Cruz was hit by a can of beer, but the senator later said the drink was a White Claw seltzer.
A video of the incident appears to show Cruz being booed by people before the drink was thrown.
Cruz told Insider’s Lauren Frias in a statement that he was grateful the man who threw the drink had a “noodle like arm.”
A spokesperson for Cruz and Arcidiacono’s attorneys did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.
