The curious rise of gigantic tablets on wheels

“KTC defines the Megpad A32Q7PRO as a portable, smart, touchscreen monitor,” the spokesperson for KTC me said. “It combines important features of a smart display and a large screen tablet. Although it shares some functions with smart TVs, tablets and monitors, it does not fully belong to a single traditional category. It is a hybrid device that is designed to bridge those use cases.”

Many devices such as the Megpad represent a push for more Android-driven, non-Google devices stimulated by a program that Google launched in 2022, the Enterprise Devices Licensing Agreement (Edla).

As explained by partners such as BenQ, Edla is a way for third parties to record Google Mobile Services (GMS), which are the most used apps of Google and APIs are bundled for use on different types of devices. GMS apps include popular software such as Google Drive, Gmail, the Google Play Store and YouTube.

“Earlier, GMS was only officially available for smartphones, tablets, TVs and wearables. Under the new EDLA, the list of devices that are eligible for GMS certification has now been expanded with Enterprise solutions such as Smart Boards,” A blog by BenQ, with Edla-certified smart displays, reads.

Since 2022 (the year LG's Stanbyme was launched), there has been an increase in non-Google devices with this EDLA certification. One of the categories that benefit from the newer program is tablets on wheels, such as the Megpad and similar options from Kefeya, Apolosign, Innocn and Durapro.

By demonstrating the marketing value of EDLA certification, the product page of the Megpad is: “Google Edla certification offers secure, direct access to Google Services and the Google Play Store with regular updates, which offer more stability and data protection then open app ecosystems with non -described apps.”

Most EDLA-certified devices seem to be interactive displays used for education. With Edla certification, devices such as the Megpad can also attract the attention of educators or even companies. In the meantime, Google likes to hand out EdLA certifications because they can stimulate the acceptance of Android, allowing Google to give more data and access to customers outside the typical Android devices, such as telephones. Products such as the Megpad can also be easier to shop with (Google likes when people use its offers to shop) than Android devices with smaller screens.
