The Canadian man held by immigration officials dies in the federal facility of South Florida, say civil servants

Miami (AP) – A Canadian man who is held by immigration officials in South Florida died in federal detention, officials said.

Johnny Noviello, 49, died on Monday afternoon in the Bureau of Prisons Federal Detion Center in Miami, said a press release of American immigration and customs enforcement. The cause of death was investigated.

Noviello was held pending the removal of the US, officials said. He entered the US in 1988 on a legal visa and became a legal permanent resident in 1991. He was convicted of drug trafficking and other charges in 2023 and sentenced to a year in prison, officials said.

Noviello was picked up last month by ICE agents at his probation office and accused of deletability because of his conviction of drugs, the authorities said.

Seven other immigration prisoners died in federal detention this year, with 11 deaths reported in 2024.
