A Thai pro-democracy activist will spend another year in prison after sharing Facebook posts describing his sexual experiences in an all-male prison in Bangkok.
Ekachai Hongkangwan, 47, previously spent two years and eight months in prison for threatening Thai Queen Suthida and blocking her royal motorcade during a 2021 mass protest. On October 14, 2020, he was charged with lèse majestéor defaming or threatening a sovereign power.
The Supreme Court of Thailand Ekachai . charged violating the Computer Crime Act for uploading “obscene material” online. Hongkangwan shared a series of posts in 2017 called “My First Prison Life” describing his sexual experiences at the all-male Bangkok Remand Prison.
The court stated that although his messages used words instead of pictures or videos, he would not have faced any punishment had he avoided the use of obscene language.
Ekachai explained that he had no intention of uploading obscene material and tried to push for better prison conditions by sharing his experiences with people who were unaware of prison life. He said his stories of his sexual experiences provided insight into life in prison.
His relatives have requested that Ekachai be released on bail pending the final ruling of Thailand’s Supreme Court in two to three days.
