The largest carnival parade took place in Cologne with tens of thousands of carnival party celebrators who looked from the sidelines.
Germany recently experienced various attacks.
In December six people were killed in an attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg and in January a toddler and adult were killed in a knife attack in the Bavarian city of Aschaffenburg.
