Gunmen ‘randomly’ kill 15 people in South Africa: police
STORY: Gunmen killed 15 people in the South African township of Soweto in the early morning hours of Sunday (July 10) after entering a bar and “shooting randomly at the customers”. on the outskirts of Johannesburg in the Gauteng province. Faith Mazibuko is a member of Gauteng’s executive council. “The type of rifles that were used, the AK-47, really injure someone in such a way that sometimes that person never makes it easy for them to actually survive.” Gauteng’s Police Commissioner Elias Mawela said no specific person had been attacked and that the assailants had fired randomly from the way rounds were distributed. Police have also confirmed a second apparently indiscriminate shooting on Saturday (July 9) evening at a tavern in Pietermaritzburg that killed four people and injured eight. That took place about 300 miles from Soweto and police said there are no suspicions that the incidents were related. South Africa is one of the world’s most violent countries with 20,000 people killed each year, one of the highest murder rates per capita in the world.
