Serious storms that bring harmful winds, hail and possibly tornadoes are expected to reach Louisville on Sunday evening and will probably continue through the night, according to the National Weather Service.
The entire Louisville Metro area is under an “improved risk” for heavy weather, the third highest of five categories published by the Storm Prediction Center of the National Weather Service. Predictors expect that a line of storms will reach South -Indiana at the beginning of 6 pm, the arrival in Louisville on Sunday evening, possibly between 9 pm and midnight. The storms can last one to three hours to continue.
The weather service also gave a chance of more than 10% on a significant tornado (an EF-2 or stronger) that took place in the Louisville metro area. West -Kennucky, as well as parts of Central and North Kennucky, are under the same threat. Officials stated that they have a “medium” confidence in tornados that take place on Sunday evening.
Louisville has a 45% chance of serious straight winds of 58 MPH or more, and a 15% chance of serious hail of at least 1 inch in diameter.
Under the improved risk of heavy weather, residents should expect that many serious storms are comparable to the “intense storms that your region can only experience once or twice a year,” said the weather service predictors in a statement. The whole of Kentucky, expected for a Far East part of the state, run an improved risk.
In a briefing released on Sunday morning by the NWS, officials stated that it was possible that a “pair of serious cells” could develop prior to the main line of storms. Louisville was able to see about an inch rain of the storms that move through the area.
In Louisville, the temperatures are expected to fall approximately 25 degrees from a peak of approximately 75. The rapid shift from warm weather to cooler conditions is one of the ingredients that causes the strong storms.
“We will have mild temperatures on Sunday until a cold front lives in,” said NWS Louisville meteorologist Brian Schettmer earlier. “That is the trigger (for the serious weather). There will be a strong low -pressure system that creates a lot of wind energy.”
National weather service officials stated that residents should have a risk of heavy weather in several ways to receive notifications if the weather watches and warnings are published at the end of Sunday.
Wednesday is also a touch to have a heavy weather threat, with the best chance of strong storms that are expected along and west of the Interstate 65 -Gang during the afternoon and at night for hours, the weather service officials explained. Just like the expected Sunday Storms, harmful wind, hail and tornados are possible on Wednesday.
Extra rain of the storms Wednesday will also increase the risk of flooding in the Louisville area. There is a small risk of flooding on Wednesday and a moderate risk Thursday, according to the NWS.
