Sex trafficking suspect Sean “Diddy” Combs was scheduled to appear in a New York City courtroom again Wednesday afternoon, where his attorneys will again push for bail and release from “appalling” jail conditions pending trial.
The music mogul was arrested Monday night after a grand jury indicted him on three felonies stemming from his alleged years of sexual abuse of women, federal prosecutors said.
A judge denied Combs bail on Tuesday, but his attorneys have appealed, insisting their client fits the profile of a suspect who should not be held in pretrial detention.
Combs came to New York City to surrender to government agents before he was arrested, defense attorneys said. This attempted “self-surrender” is “something the court should consider,” Combs' attorneys said.
In addition, Combs said he should not be subjected to harsh conditions in a federal prison in New York City, citing the murders and suicides that have occurred there in recent years.
Courts “have recognized that conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn are not appropriate for pretrial detention,” defense attorney Marc Agnifilo wrote in a letter to U.S. District Judge Robyn Tarnofsky.
“Numerous courts in this district have expressed concerns about the appalling detention conditions here.”
The government argued that Combs poses a threat to the community because of the violent acts alleged in the indictment and that he poses a flight risk because of his immense wealth.
Court documents show a grand jury indicted Combs on three felony charges: racketeering, sex trafficking and using transportation for prostitution.
