A 45-foot statue of a naked woman is the newest and longest resident of San Francisco's Embarcadero Plaza.
The artwork, entitled “R-Urpution”, was unveiled with music, lights and performance Art Thursday, thanks to the Public Art Non-profit Illuminate. Designed to glow and seem to “breathe” through internal engines at night, the statue was intended to represent strength and compassion.
Instead, it has been started – internet memes and questions about the priorities of the city.
Originally made for Burning Man in 2015 by sculptor Marco Cochrane, the stainless steel figure is now outside the ferry building and casts a long (and anatomically detailed) shadow over a city where fewer and fewer people appear to be impressed by spectacle.

After a video of influencer Collin Rugg, social media illuminated viral and showed that a cherry -picker was cleaved awkward between the legs of the statue during the installation. Commentators quickly had a field day.

“The city named after St. Francis is now dominated by the feminist, anti-male agenda. The results speak for themselves,” he said. “A huge, naked woman who blocks the proud, iconic ferry building is now a perfect metaphor for San Francisco.”
However, the return was not limited to conservatives.
In a KQED commentary: “Nobody asked for this,” wrote art editor Sarah Hotchkiss, “while on Thursday I stared at this monumental steel and mesh image of the art, I felt ashamed of the city of San Francisco. One of the different problems with R-evolution is that we are all the audience, and nobody asked it.”

Her criticism contributes to a growing choir of San Franciscans in the political spectrum and wonders how and why this was made a social priority.
