San Diego (Fox 5/Kusi) -Lokal Legal Enforcement Bodies say that a growing number of children on high-speed e-bikes and even electric motorcycles in city streets on city streets, which expresses serious safety problems.
In a joint press conference on Monday morning, San Diego Police, the Sheriff's Department, California Highway Patrol and various city leaders announced a regional urge to increase awareness about the risks.
In the past year, authorities reported 82 e-bike-crashes in San Diego County-78 of those incidents resulted in injuries. The police say that most of them are involved with children from 11 to 17 years old.
The police say that many of the vehicles used are not real e-bikes, but off-road motorcycles that are not street legal.
“Recently there is an increasing number of e-motorcycles that are driven illegally on our streets, in particular by young drivers,” said an officer.
San Diego Police Traffic Officer Nicholas Tamagni said the speeds make the crashes particularly dangerous.
“It's strange to think that you can go 46 to 50 miles per hour as an 11-year-old child on our roads,” Tamagni said. “Now we see children being seriously injured.”
Legal enforcement agencies said that they not only increase educational efforts, but also to consider enforcement actions, which could lead to legal consequences for minor drivers who violate the law, including a delay in obtaining their driver's license.
