Kiev (Reuters) – Russia fired its third ballistic missile at Kiev on Sunday, with preliminary data showing all air weapons were destroyed as it approached the city, the Ukrainian capital's military administration said.
“This is already the third ballistic attack on the capital in August, with precise intervals of six days between each attack,” Serhiy Popko, the head of Kiev's military administration, said via the Telegram messaging app.
“According to preliminary information, the Russians have again, for the third time in a row, most likely used North Korean ballistic missiles.”
Popko added that Ukrainian air defense units also destroyed a number of Russian-launched drones.
The extent of the attack was not immediately clear. Popko said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Reuters could not independently verify the type of missiles fired. A Reuters witness heard explosions that sounded like air defense systems early Sunday morning.
About two hours after the initial attack, Kiev, the surrounding region and most of central and northeastern Ukraine came under renewed fire, with threats of more missiles being fired at the city, the Ukrainian air force said.
