We got our first look at the interior of the refreshed Porsche Cayenne at the end of March. The midlife update for model year 2024 was notable in that Porsche put some buttons and other physical controls back where they belonged, after the all-touch screen hassle that is the electric Taycan car. Tonight, the German automaker showed off the rest of the 2024 Cayenne and released some technical details, including what sounds like quite an upgrade to the plug-in hybrid version.

As is normally the case with a midlife update, there is new styling for the front of the Cayenne, which in this case includes new headlamp units, as well as a new front bumper and bonnet. The taillights and rear are also new, and Porsche has added three new colors, including a few metallic blues.

Under the skin, some more drastic changes have been made with the Cayenne E-Hybrid, the plug-in variant that starts at $ 91,700 for 2024.

There’s a new, more powerful electric motor and a larger capacity battery than the one in the Cayenne E-Hybrid we tested in 2019. Electric power is increased by 30 percent, from 134 hp (100 kW) to 174 hp (130 kW), and battery capacity increases from a gross capacity of 17.9 kWh to 25.9 kWh.

And that battery charges faster when plugged in, thanks to a more powerful built-in 11kW inverter that cuts charging time to just 2.5 hours.

There's no DC fast charging as this is just a plug-in hybrid. But it charges faster than before when powered with suitable AC power.

This should be quite a bump in the Cayenne E-Hybrid’s electric range, which was around 22 miles when we tested a 2019 model. An official electric range from the EPA, as well as other fuel economy data, should be available closer to the Cayenne’s arrival this summer.

The E-Hybrid’s V6 engine has also been tweaked a bit, now generating 348 hp (260 kW) and 368 lb-ft (499 Nm). The combined power is 463 hp (345 kW). The revised V6 can also be found in the standard Cayenne, which starts at $79,200. But the V6 is absent from the updated Cayenne S (starting at $97,500) – instead this model uses a twin-turbocharged V8 again.

The coupe body style adds between $4,000 and $6,400 depending on the powertrain.

All three models – Cayenne, Cayenne S and Cayenne E-Hybrid – should now be more comfortable SUVs, as Porsche is fitting new two-valve dampers as standard.

Sadly, the top-spec Cayenne is no longer the bonkers Turbo S E-Hybrid that so entertained us in 2020 – now that honor goes to the not-hybrid Turbo GT at all.
