Police and school officials in Wilmington this week are investigating a “serious and disturbing physical altercation” in a boys’ bathroom that left the superintendent of schools “appalled” not only at the incident but also because some students recorded video and posted it online. .
In a letter to the school community dated March 30, Superintendent Glenn Brand said the incident happened Tuesday and investigators are working to identify the students involved.
Video sent to Boston 25 indicates a student was picked up in the bathroom and his head shoved into a toilet in a cubicle in the bathroom. The video below is blurred due to the age of those involved.
“I am really shocked by the actions of these students who are unacceptable and do not represent the core values of this educational community,” said Supt. Brand. “I expect all our students to have the right to attend a safe and supportive school. While I recognize that the sheer number of our students consistently make the right choices to support such an environment, we will have zero tolerance for those who don’t.”
“The Wilmington Public School prioritizes the safety, well-being and respect of all our students and staff above all else,” said Supt. Brand.
“It is therefore with great disappointment that I am writing to inform you of a serious and disturbing physical altercation that took place in one of the boys’ toilets (Tuesday),” Brand said. “Not only is the incident itself worrisome, but also that some of our students recorded the altercation and put it online.”
“All students found guilty will be held fully accountable and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken, as will the removal of appropriate privileges granted to those students,” Supt said. Brand. “I assure you that we will take relevant legal action if deemed justified after the investigation.”
The inspector also hinted at other recent problems at the school.
“This incident comes in the wake of a number of other concerns about disturbing student behavior. Everyone has a duty to help create the kind of school environment our students deserve, including our staff, our families and most importantly, our students themselves,” says Brand.
Boston 25 has spoken to the Wilmington Police Department for more information about the investigation.
The chief of police says that detectives have several videos in their possession.
