Pirates SS Oneil Cruz injured in home plate collision

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz left Sunday’s game against the Chicago White Sox with a left leg injury after colliding at home plate.

Cruz was trying to score from third on a Ke’Bryan Hayes chopper when Cruz’s leg bent awkwardly under him as he tried to slide. Cruz’s leg appeared to collide with catcher Seby Zavala’s legs, who easily tagged Cruz out.

The six-foot-tall Cruz writhed in pain and the benches and bullpens were briefly emptied after Pittsburgh-designated hitter Carlos Santana appeared to object to Zavala’s behavior.

There were no excrements and order was quickly restored.

Cruz got to his feet and was helped to the bench by several members of the Pittsburgh athletic training staff.

Cruz had walked at the top of the inning to extend his on-base streak to 19 games, the third-longest active streak in the majors.
