WASHINGTON (REUTERS) – The new ambassador of Russia in the United States will present his references to the Trump government informally on Thursday, the US Department of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday.

Alexander Darchiev, who was recently mentioned as a Russian ambassador in the US, will present a reference at 2:15 Eastern Time (1815 GMT), according to the public diagram of the department.

The Department said that Louis L. Bono, the higher official of the Office for the Office for European and Eurasian Affairs, will be present.

Moscow has not had an ambassador in the US since the last ambassador left his position in October.

The new envoy previously served two long stints in the Russian embassy in Washington and was ambassador in Canada from 2014 to 2021. Like other Senior Russian diplomats, he has been known in recent years for strong public accusations of the United States and the West.

The appointment of Darchiev comes as Russia and the United States tries to restore damaged relationships and end the war in Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump said that he wants to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin soon in what the first meeting between Russian and American leaders since 2021 would be.
