Mexico City (AP) drug Lord Ernesto “Don Neto” Fonseca Carrillo, convicted in the murder of an American drug enforcement administration of 1985, was liberated from the prison after completing his 40-year punishment, confirmed a federal agent at the end of Wednesday.
Fonseca, 94, had broadcast the rest of his sentence under home determination outside of Mexico City since he had moved from prison in 2016. The federal agent, who asked anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the case, said he was released last weekend.
The co-founder of the Guadalajara cartel together with Rafael Caro Quintero, Fonseca was convicted of the kidnapping, torture and murder of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.
Caro Quintero, who was also convicted of the murder, was one of the 29 cartel figures that Mexico sent to the United States in February.
It was not immediately clear whether the United States would also look for Fonseca.
Fonseca was arrested in 1985 in Puerto Vallarta.
