Meta's layoffs leave Supernatural fitness users in mourning

There is division in the community over who will stay and continue to pay the subscription fee and who will leave. Supernatural has over 3,000 lessons available on the service, so while no new content will be added, some believe there is still plenty of content in the library. Other users are concerned about how Supernatural will continue to license music from major bands.

“Supernatural is great, but that's why I'm canceling it,” Chip told me. “The library is large, so there is plenty to keep you busy, but not for the same price.”

There are other VR training experiences like FitXR or even the VR staple Defeat Sabrefrom which Supernatural draws many design concepts. Yet for many of the supernatural believers, they don't hit the same bar.

“I'm going to keep doing it until they turn the lights off for us,” said Stefanie Wong, a Bay Area accountant who has been using Supernatural since shortly after the pandemic and has organized and attended meetings. “It's not the app. It's the community, and it's the coaches we really care about.”

    Welcome to the new era

I tried out Supernatural's Together feature on Wednesday, the day after the layoffs. That's where I met Chip and Alisa. When we could stop to catch our breath, we talked about the changes that were coming to the service. They had played previous sessions hosted by Jane Fonda or playlists with a mix of music that changed frequently. This was an artist series featuring entirely Imagine Dragons songs.

During the session, as we were hitting blocks while being serenaded by this shirtless dude singing, Supernatural coach Dwana Olsen's recorded stories stepped in to pump us up.

“Take advantage of these moments,” Olsen said as we pushed away. “Use these moves to remind you how much of a wonderful life you have left to live.”

Honestly, it was downright refreshing. And bittersweet. Sweating, huffing and puffing we finished another round. Chip, Alisa and I high-fived like crazy and got ready for another round.

“Beautiful,” Alisa said. “It's just beautiful, isn't it?”
