One man was killed in a single-vehicle traffic accident early Sunday after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a utility pole.
At 2:21 a.m., officers were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash in the 7000 block of Wooldridge Road. They discovered that a white passenger car had struck the utility pole, causing it to break, according to a news release issued by Corpus Christi Police Department Senior Officer Jennifer Collier.
Police say the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames and the front seat passenger was able to exit the car. However, the driver, an unknown man, was unable to leave the vehicle and died on the spot from the injuries he sustained.
The incident was not a homicide, Lt. Eryca Gonzalez said in a written statement.
Both occupants of the car were 21 years old, police said.
The passenger was transported to a local hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
Traffic Unit investigators discovered the car traveling westbound on Wooldridge Road at a high rate of speed and through a green light at the intersection with Rodd Field Road. Apart from the high speed, police do not know what caused the vehicle to lose control and crash into the pole.
Senior Officer Antonio Contreras confirmed in a written statement Monday that investigators are currently working to determine the driver's speed.
Police could not confirm whether the car was in the center or right lane of Wooldridge Road, or whether the driver intended to drive straight ahead or make a turn, he said.
