Bystanders were stunned as they watched a man cling to the hood of a car as it sped past Florida State University's favorite cafe, the Sweet Shop.
Over the past week, thousands of people have watched in disbelief a video posted to Barstool FSU's social media pages that looked like a scene from an action movie set on the streets of Tallahassee.
A white sedan is seen leaving the cafe's parking lot on West Jefferson Street, with a man hanging from the hood. The video ends just as the car makes an abrupt right turn onto a side street.
In addition to dozens of humorous comments, other witnesses from that day provided details about what led up to the events shown in the viral video.
One commentator said he saw the whole thing and that the man driving the car got angry because his Nutella croissant didn't have enough Nutella and his frappe took too long. Frustrated, the man “grabbed the three drinks and all the food that was left on the counter and ran through the door.”
“The candy store guy jumped over the counter so fast and followed him out the door,” the commenter wrote. “I think they were yelling some kind of insults at each other but it wasn't clear. Next thing you know, the candy store guy was on the hood of the guy's car and the guy was driving away.”
Several comments are reporting that the man hanging from the car is the owner of the candy store. Tallahassee police said they could not confirm the identity of anyone in the video, but the video shows part of an incident that is under investigation.
A TPD spokesperson told the Tallahassee Democrat that officers responded to the cafe on the afternoon of June 24 for a report of a physical disturbance.
“A suspect entered the business and stole a tip jar,” TPD said. “An altercation with staff ensued, resulting in a physical confrontation. The suspect fled the scene.”
The incident is an open and ongoing investigation, and no arrests have been made at this time. The owner of the Sweet Shop declined to comment on the incident while the investigation is ongoing.
