Rumors of a collaboration between former Apple designer Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman surfaced last year, but the two have remained silent on the matter until now. In a profile of that was published over the weekend, but Ive confirms that his company LoveFrom is leading the design of an AI product being built with Altman. Tang Tan and Evans Hankey, both of whom held senior design roles at Apple, are also on board.
There is a team of about 10 employees involved in the project so far, based in a San Francisco office building that is one of several properties Ive has purchased in a single city block, the Times. But we still don’t know much about the product they’re working on. The report describes Tan and Hankey finding wheelchairs among LoveFrom’s properties “covered in paper and cardboard boxes containing early ideas for a product that uses AI to create a computing experience less socially disruptive than the iPhone.”
Since leaving Apple in 2019 to start LoveFrom, the design firm has been working on and even , but we haven’t seen much in the way of hardware — just . While an AI product seems to be on the horizon, there’s currently no timeline for when it will debut.
