J.D. Vance marched briskly onto Air Force 2, Kamala Harris’s plane, planning to give political reporters a show as he uninvitedly confronted the vice president on Wednesday. His power-play dreams, like most of his chaotic vice presidential campaigns, were immediately dashed when he realized Harris wasn’t in attendance.
“I just wanted to look at my future aircraft,” Vance told campaign reporters gathered on the tarmac in Wisconsin.
He didn't get a chance to face Harris, but said he wanted to “greet the vice president and ask her why she's refusing to answer questions.”
It is unclear what questions Vance was referring to, as Harris has repeatedly pressed Donald Trump to attend a September 10 debate he had already agreed to appear at when he ran against President Joe Biden.
Vance told a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday that he would “absolutely” debate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz if given the chance.
About 40 minutes after the Ohio senator confronted his invisible opponent, Harris’ campaign released a video based on a popular TikTok audio that appeared to mock Harris.
“Now I want to sit back, relax and enjoy my evening, when all of a sudden I hear this excited, creaking voice,” the voiceover says, before switching from Harris and Walz in front of their plane to the Trump-Vance plane taking off.
Harris and Vance are staging a dueling campaign this week, as he follows her around the country in a not-at-all-unfamiliar manner.
