Police in the western Indian state of Gujarat have arrested seven people for beating a soldier to death.

Melaji Vaghela was assaulted after he protested the posting of a video of his teenage daughter online, according to the police complaint.

According to the complaint, the video went viral after it was uploaded.

The alleged attackers are relatives of a teenage boy whom Vaghela accused of uploading the video.

Vaghela’s wife and son were also injured in the attack.

The victim was cooperating with India’s Border Guard Service.

According to the police complaint filed by Vaghela’s wife Manjula, the attack took place in Kheda district of Gujarat on Saturday evening.

Vaghela, his wife, two sons and cousin had gone to the teenage boy’s home to file a complaint against him for allegedly uploading a video of the girl. Several news reports have described the video as “obscene”, but the BBC has been unable to confirm this.

According to the police complaint, the discussion escalated into a fight and the boy’s relatives attacked Vaghela and his family with “wooden sticks” and “sharp objects”.

Vaghela was seriously injured and died instantly. One of his sons is in hospital with a head injury.

The police have reported, among other things, murder against the seven suspects. They were sent to justice on Monday and have not yet made a statement.
