Germany set to approve €397 million in military aid to Ukraine, letter says

BERLIN (Reuters) – Germany is expected to approve nearly 400 million euros ($445 million) in military aid to Ukraine, a letter seen by Reuters showed on Thursday.

“Given the continuing deteriorating military situation in Ukraine, there is a serious risk that Ukraine, without significantly expanded material support, will be defeated in its defense campaign,” the letter said.

At the request of the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Finance is requesting approval of the additional expenditure from the budget committee of the House of Representatives.

“The resulting unplanned need of approximately EUR 397 million has only become concrete in recent weeks to the extent that it meets the constitutional and budgetary requirements of an unplanned need,” the letter shows.

The Ministry of Finance has indicated that this must be met immediately in order to implement the measures in 2024 so that they can have an effect for the rest of the year.

German aid to Ukraine amounted to approximately 8 billion euros in 2024.
