The exchange was captured by TMZ, and the person asking a question about Biden’s staying power appeared to work for the outlet. The person approached Stephanopoulos as he was walking through the streets of New York City in athletic gear.
“Today I responded to a question from a passerby. I should not have done so,” Stephanopoulos said in a statement previously shared with both Puck News and TMZ. “George was expressing his own views and not the views of ABC News,” the Disney news unit said in a separate statement.
Stephanopoulos recently got a firsthand look at Biden. The journalist, who co-hosts both “This Week” and “Good Morning America” for ABC News, was granted the first televised interview with President Biden following his recent debate with former President Donald Trump. During that event, televised by CNN, Biden appeared weak and confused, and his performance has drawn widespread opposition from Democrats, along with questions about his fitness to run for the White House in the 2024 presidential election.
Stephanopoulos pressed him throughout the interview, asking Biden if he had undergone cognitive testing and how he would feel if he ran for the White House again but lost the election to Trump.
Stephanopoulos is also a former White House communications adviser who worked under former President Bill Clinton.
