EUSTIS, Florida. – A Lake County sheriff's deputy has died after he was shot and trapped inside a home while responding to a report of a disturbance in Eustis, Florida, Friday night. Two other deputies were also shot while trying to rescue that deputy, the Lake County sheriff's office said.
“They were ambushed,” Sheriff Peyton C. Grinnell said. “We lost one tonight.”
Two people in the home were found dead, he said, though it was not immediately clear whether they were killed by murder-suicide or by responding officers. A third person in the home was taken to the hospital. That person's condition was not immediately known.
According to Sheriff Grinnell, officers responded to a report of a disturbance in the neighborhood around 8 p.m. and were alerted to a nearby home where they found the back door kicked in and heard a disturbance inside the residence on Brookside Drive. Upon entering the home, officers were met with heavy gunfire, the sheriff said. One officer was struck and trapped inside the home.
