Ex-Labour councilor accused of the 'HoneyTrap' case of Westminster

A former Labor Councilor is accused of blackmail and communication shares, in connection with the Westminster “Honeytap” scandal.

The accusation of Chantage relates to alleged unjustified requirements for the telephone numbers of a maximum of 12 people.

Oliver Steadman, 28, is also accused of communication -violations with regard to sending alleged unsolicited indecent images.

Last year, a series of men, usually in politics, revealed that they had received unsolicited, flirty WhatsApp messages from people who called themselves “Charlie” or “Abi”. In some cases, explicit images were exchanged.

The then conservative parliament member William Wragg resigned after he said that he had given the telephone numbers of fellow MPs to a man he met on a dating app.

Mr Steadman was suspended as a member of work, after the party was informed of his arrest in June 2024.

He resigned as a councilor in Islington, Noord -Londen, the following month.

Malcolm Mchaffie, head of the special crime division of the crown prosecutor, said: “We have decided to prosecute Oliver Steadman with blackmail and five communication -violations with regard to a total of five victims who work within politics and Westminster.

“This follows an investigation by the Metropolitan Police Service that investigated messages with alleged unsolicited indecent images that were sent to a number of people within parliamentary political circles with WhatsApp between October 2023 and April 2024.

“Our public prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.”

Mr. Steadman will appear on 3 November at Westminster Magistrates' Court.
