The Des Moines School Board is holding a special session on Saturday 27 September at 5 pm to discuss the immigration -related arrest of superintendent Ian Roberts.
Roberts, who has led the largest school district of Iowa since 2023, was arrested on Friday 26 September. Federal officials said that in May 2024 a court had issued a “final order” for the deportation of the resident of Guyana and old American resident.
The school board of des Moines said it would “discuss these human resources in a closed session. The board will also take action with regard to the status of the administrative leave of Dr. Roberts after a closed session.”

The board on Friday said that employee Matt Smith will serve as an interim -superintendent until further notice. Smith previously served as an interim superintendent during the 2022-23 school year.
