Delhi driver grows garden on auto rickshaw roof to beat the heat

Yellow and green auto rickshaws are ubiquitous on New Delhi’s roads, but Mahendra Kumar’s vehicle stands out: It has a rooftop garden meant to keep passengers cool during the scorching summer season. Kumar says the thick patch of greenery will keep the vehicle cool even if temperatures in the Indian capital reach 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit), enough to melt the tar on the roads. Kumar, 48, has grown more than 20 varieties of shrubs, crops and flowers, attracting commuters and passersby who stop to click selfies and photos of the unique “moving garden.”
