A Norwegian cruise ship separated from the pier in the midst of strong winds, causing a guest of the gangway to fall into the water.
The passenger was on board in the process, while the Norwegian epic was moored in Catania, Sicily, on 30 May, according to a spokesperson for the cruise company.
“At crew members on duty, the guest could immediately help from the water and see that they were evaluated by the medical team,” the spokesperson told USA Today in an e -mail statement. “It was established that they were sustaining minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for further research and treatment.”
The ship left Civitavecchia on 24 May for a 10 -day cruise with stops in Italy, Greece, Malta and France, according to CruiseMapper.
Tyler Roys, senior meteorologist at AccuWeather, said there were gusts of wind up to 45 miles per hour in the afternoon from the east-northeast. “Stains like these are not common when we enter the summer months, but are more common during the winter season,” he said in an e -mail.
The cruise line stopped the disembarkation and the embarkation until it improved again and “the ship could safely moor again.”
“During this break our crew started actively with our guests until they could ban the ship again,” the spokesperson added. “As always, the safety of our guests and crew is our top priority.”
The incident is the only one of his kind in recent years. Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Magic Ship hit a pier in Jamaica during Windig weather in February 2024. Wind also caused an MSC Cruises ship, MSC Sinfonia, and another Norwegian vessel, Norwegian fine to break out of their berths last month.
