Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) faced the heat on Tuesday after being called out on CNN for holding “two standards” for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Donald Trump.
Prior to his interview with host Pamela Brown, Turner sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray requesting: explain the “unprecedented” heist Monday at Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago.
The interview comes a day after a number of news outlets reported that the FBI raid was related to the Justice Department’s investigation into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified material as he moved from the White House to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida moved.
A search warrant for Trump’s estate has yet to be released to the public.
Turner suggested the raid was politically motivated and said officials treated Trump differently than Clinton for using a private email server while he was Secretary of State.
“We have two standards where we have Hillary Clinton with her own computer system and classified information about getting a subpoena and the ability to go through that server and see whether or not it’s personal material or official material,” Turner said. .
“And this president – president, not secretary of state – is being ambushed. They are clearly two different standards, and we want to know why.”
Brown pointed to a 2016 statement asking Turner to hold Clinton “responsible for her extremely careless actions.”
Brown asked why he doesn’t share “the same concern” about Trump’s alleged mishandling of White House documents.
“Why was it a concern for you with Hillary Clinton and now not with Donald Trump?” asked Brown.
Turner replied that Clinton’s material tracked her while she was serving as Secretary of State, while the material allegedly in Trump’s possession may or may not have actually been “classified.”
Brown brought the interview back to Turner’s claim that the Justice Department was going after President Joe Biden’s political rival.
Seconds before Turner’s response, CNN began playing through a string of “political opponents” that Trump wanted the Justice Department to launch investigations.
Turner then claimed that the Obama-Biden White House began the “politicization” of the FBI and the Justice Department.
He also discussed a potential presidential election by Trump in 2024, something that makes him Biden’s “absolute” political rival.
Brown asked whether Turner’s political rival’s “absolute” comment meant he was suggesting that Biden’s Justice Department is “trying to go after Trump” before 2024.
Turner snapped quickly back to the anchor in the air.
