It's been almost three years now Destination creator (and Sony subsidiary) Bungie formally announced a revival of the legendary game Marathon FPS Franchise. And it's been about seven months since the game's originally announced release date of September 23, 2025 was postponed indefinitely after a reportedly poor response to the game's initial Alpha test.
But today, Bungie revealed in a post on the PlayStation Blog that it's new Marathon would finally arrive on PS5, Windows, and Xbox Series
Today's pre-order trailer reveals the Marathon release date.
Unlike Lot 2which switched to a free-to-play model in 2019, the new Marathon retails for $40 in a standard edition or a $60 Deluxe edition that includes some digital rewards and cosmetics. That reflects the pricing of the somewhat comparable Bow Raiderswhich recently achieved 12 million sales in less than twelve weeks.
A new kind Marathon
Unlike the original Marathon trilogy about the '90s Macintosh – which closely followed the original's single-player campaign corridors and deathmatch multiplayer Fate– the new Marathon is described as a “PvPvE survival extraction shooter.” That means gameplay is based on exploring different zones and searching for cosmetics and gear upgrades in exploration missions, alone or with up to two friends, and then “breaking out” these missions into fast-paced PvP battles in the blink of an eye, according to the game's official description.
