(Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden said on Tuesday his administration was “thinking about it now” when asked whether the U.S. would lift restrictions on Ukraine's use of long-range weapons in its war against Russia.
The US is reluctant to supply weapons or approve their use, fearing that this would escalate the conflict.
Other Kiev allies supply weapons, but there are restrictions on how and when they can be used in Russia, amid concerns that such attacks could provoke retaliation that draws NATO countries into the war or trigger a nuclear conflict.
Sources told Reuters last week that the US was close to a deal to supply Ukraine with such weapons, but that Kiev would have to wait several months because the US had to resolve technical issues before any weapons could be delivered.
