Cue cards are common, but right-wing commentators treated these as a serious blunder.
President Joe Biden accidentally unveiled a cue card during a White House meeting on Thursday, offering a glimpse of very simple instructions for the meeting process.
Biden made comments in the Roosevelt Room to a meeting of state governors about working with 11 states to accelerate the growth of the offshore wind industry and the domestic supply chain in the US.
The photographer documenting the event captured one of the documents Biden used during the meeting: a cue card titled “The President” with the title of the event, followed by bullet-point instructions seemingly to Biden.
A photo of the list, which is slightly blurry, can be seen below:
The full list of instructions reads:
-
“YOU enter the Roosevelt Room and say hello to the participants.”
-
“YOU take a seat.”
-
“Press enter.”
-
“YOU give short comments” […]This note was partially blocked by Biden’s finger.
-
“Press leaves.”
-
“You are asking a question of Liz Shuler, president of AFL-CIO. Please note: Liz is participating virtually.”
-
“YOU thank the participants.”
-
“You leave.”
It is not uncommon for a leader’s press team to draft a memorandum of events, including instructions for the speaker. The White House press office did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment early Friday.
But the simplicity of the instructions — including “YOU leave” at the end — sparked speculative comments from Biden’s political opponents, including far-right former presidential adviser Steven Miller.
Miller tweeted, referring to the card: “There should be emergency hearings next year on the 25th Amendment,” the amendment referring to the removal of a president who is incapacitated. There is no evidence that Biden is incapacitated.
Right-wing news outlets also treated Biden seen with such a list as a serious blunder, with top figures among The daily caller† the daily threadand satire site the Babylon Bee comment on it.
Throughout the event, Biden stayed with his frequently repeated posture Connecting renewable energy to the economy: “When I think of ‘climate’, when I think of ‘environment’, I think of ‘jobs’,” he said.
In March 2021, the Biden administration announced the goal of producing 30 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030. By doing so, the government says it will create 77,000 jobs and avoid 78 million tons of CO2 emissions.
“The last administration tried to block offshore wind because they thought it could cause cancer. No kidding,” Biden said Thursday, citing comments made by former President Donald Trump in 2019, referring to a long-debunked conspiracy theory.
