Döner kebab is beloved in Berlin. In Turkey, the dish was originally made with lamb and sold alone on a plate. But in the 1970s, Turkish immigrants in Berlin chose to serve it in a pita and adapted the recipe to make it special for Berliners. But the snack’s status could be in jeopardy if the European Commission approves Turkey’s bid to regulate the famous dish. The commission must decide by 24 September whether 11 objections to the application are justified. If so, Germany and Turkey will have up to six months to reach a compromise. The European Commission will have the final say.
