Are Subrosa BMX bikes of good quality? (Rapid response!)

Founded only in 2006, Subrosa promises to lead you way back in the field of Bicycle Motocross (BMX). Although not a big name due to its youth, Subrosa’s popularity is increasing day by day. But are Subrosa BMX bikes any good?

Subrosa BMX bikes are good because they come in a variety of styles for BMX riders of all levels. These bikes also come in a wide range of sizes, enjoy quality frames and good geometry, and are beautiful and affordable.

So they tend to tick most of the boxes if you’re seriously looking for a high quality BMX bike from a reputable brand and one that won’t cost all your savings.

That doesn’t mean they’re the perfect BMX bikes, though. No, they are not, and neither are any BMX bike brand.

Like any other BMX bike brand, Subrosa faces a few drawbacks, which I will share in this Subrosa BMX bike review. But let’s talk about the brief history of the brand first.

    Brand history

Subrosa is a BMX brand founded in 2006 by elite BMX riders Ryan Sher and Ron Bonner. Ryan grew up riding BMX bikes for fun, while Ron has a background in BMX brand design, previously working for Shadow Conspiracy and UGP.

The two met and a friendship that culminated in a business partnership was born that day. Their dream was to make complete street and dirt bikes that would be more affordable than the bikes already on the market and still be of good quality even for professional riders and experts.

According to Ryan, their pieces are difficult to duplicate, which explains their enormous popularity and rapid growth.

The two inventors strive to develop and introduce a new product every year, making it better than the previous models. Their selling points are being creative, making the bikes unique and embracing affordability.

Why are Subrosa BMX bikes good?

My argument from the start is that Subrosa BMX bikes are good, and the reasons for that are shared below:

    1. It’s all about style variation

The manufacturer makes bikes for all riders, whether they are beginners, children or professional riders. Best of all, all of its styles represent a specific group of riders.

For example, the Subrosa Sono is an entry-level model, while the Subrosa Novus is a professional choice. Big guys can go for the Subrosa Letum, as tall riders will find the Subrosa Tiro more comfortable.

In addition to the four families/styles, Subrosa makes the Altus, Park and Malum, which I will discuss in detail later.

    2. Size variation in full effect

Subrosa not only makes BMX bikes for riders with different skills or experience levels, but also makes them in different sizes.

This means that children, young people and adults can all find and ride their matching BMX bikes.

Here’s a size chart Subrosa uses for its complete bikes.

Wheel Size (In) Age (years) Rider height (In)
    14” 4-5 36-44”
    16” 3-7 38-44”
    18” 5-9 42-52”
    20” 7+ 48-52”
    22” 10+ 56-66”+
    26” 15+ 56-66”+

With the size chart, it’s clear that kids can ride 14-inch, 16-inch, 18-inch, 20-inch and some 22-inch Subrosa bikes, depending on their height and age.

However, adults will find 26-inch, 22-inch and maybe 20-inch more comfortable depending on their height.

    3. Frame quality is a priority

One reason to support Subrosa’s meteoric rise is the quality of its bicycle frames. The manufacturer uses 100% Hi-Ten or Chromoly steel on its bikes to ensure they are strong, fatigue resistant, stable and durable.

That’s quality there, and the best part is that maintenance isn’t complicated. You just need to stay away from rusting, and the frame will serve its term.

    4. Good geometry at its best

Subrosa differentiates its BMX bikes from others by making bikes with a high stand-over height to improve their stability, a longer dropout to give you more room to get to the rear wheel, and a raised bottom bracket for the extra pop .

    5. It’s all in the looks

These BMX bikes are not only physical copies on the street, but they also stand out for their appearance. The frames come in colorful and unique designs to distinguish themselves from other brands. They also have a neat, flawless look that is likely to remain timeless.

    6. Affordability under control

Subrosa bikes are generally affordable. The prices of their BMX bikes start from $389.99, where you get a Subrosa Altus.

Most bikes cost less than $650, but their most high-end family Subrosa Novus goes for $1,199. So, except for the Novus, which is aimed at professional BMX riders, the other bike lines are affordable.

    The cons

While Subrosa’s merits are obvious, a few flaws of the brand are worth noting. They contain:

    • Short warranty – Subrosa offers only a 30-day warranty against manufacturing defects for the frames, cranks, and forks of its bikes, probably the shortest I’ve noticed. Complete bikes, on the other hand, have a 6-month frame and fork warranty against breakage and cracking, while the other components have 30-day coverage.
    • bit heavy – Subrosa’s most lightweight bike is the Salvador Park which weighs 25.9 pounds. Other bikes average 26-29 pounds, which can be a bit heavy when you consider that most high-end BMX bikes average 22-25 pounds.

Subrosa Bike Range (Subrosa BMX Review)

Subrosa mainly makes seven complete bikes (or bike families) as follows:

    • sono
    • altus
    • Salvador
    • malum
    • Novus
    • letum
    • Tyrol

    Let’s discuss them.

Is the Subrosa Altus BMX bike any good?

Subrosa Altus is Subrosa’s most budget-friendly BMX bike that is suitable for novice riders, especially children and small adults. Despite being a budget bike, the build quality is impressive as it can handle everyday abuse.

It has a sturdier frame and robust wheels to match. So the Subrosa Altus is a good starting point for kids who want to ride aggressively and practice before a BMX competition.
