Alachua County declares emergency due to possible tropical cyclone

    Alachua County has declared a local emergency in preparation for Tropical Cyclone Four. The order was signed Friday night by County Commission Chair Mary Alford.

    The locations are open on Saturday August 3. Maximum 10 bags per person.

    • Alachua County Wayside Park, 11855 NW 39th Ave., Gainesville. 10am to 6pm

    • Gainesville Public Works Administration, 405 NW 39th Ave., Gainesville. 10am to 4pm

    • Citizens Field, 1000 NE Waldo Road, Gainesville. 10am to 4pm.

    Preparing for the storm

    The best way to stay informed is to text ALACHUA to 888-777 and follow the Alachua County Facebook page. The Alachua County Ready website is now live and is a good source for the latest storm information.

    Alachua County residents should not ignore this storm. Take the necessary precautions now to prepare yourself and your family. You should have your hurricane kits and plans ready if you haven't already.

    Some of these actions include, but are not limited to:

    • Sign up for emergency notifications by texting ALACHUA to 888-777.

    • Clear away items around your home that could be lifted by strong winds.

    • Securing properties in flood-prone areas.

    • Remove branches around windows.

    • Remove vehicles from under trees.

    • Make sure everyone in your family is aware of your disaster plan.

    • Make sure you have a plan in case of extended power outages.

    • Refilling prescribed medications.

    • Have a plan for your pets.

    • Ask for advice from your neighbors and people you know who have special needs.

    • Use Alachua.weatherstem.com to view weather stations located near your home.

    • Visit hurricanes.gov and weather.gov/jax for the latest storm track and potential impacts.
