After sending an email about job cuts for salaried workers, Tesla CEO Elon Musk appeared to retract his statements on Saturday in a tweet, writing that the number of salaried employees may not change drastically.
Twitter account @WholeMarsBlog tweeted that Tesla’s workforce would increase over the next 12 months.
Musk replied, saying that the total number of hired Tesla employees would increase, but that the paid staff “should be quite flat”.
Musk did not clarify whether existing salaried employees would become clock workers or whether new employees would be hired at Tesla.
Musk said he had a “super bad feeling” regarding the economy in an email titled “pause all hiring worldwide” sent to Tesla executives on Friday. As a result, Musk said he would have to cut 10% of its salaried workforce, Reuters reported.
Musk wrote that the number of employees per hour at Tesla would increase. The Tesla CEO said the memo did not apply to anyone “who builds cars, builds batteries or installs solar energy,” Reuters reported.
Two days earlier, Musk sent a memo to his executives telling them to return to office or resign, Electrek reported.
Tesla employed 100,000 at the end of last year, according to an SEC filing.
A Tesla spokesperson did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
