Actor guilty of abuse the day after his release

A former actor was found guilty of attacking his ex-partner the day after he was released early from prison.

Jason Hoganson, 53, left HMP Durham on 10 September, after he had served a half -prison sentence of 18 months for the abuse of Rachel Usher and the violation of a street ban.

The next day he was arrested in the West End of Newcastle, after he went to Mrs. Usher's flat and had given her a blow.

The Newcastle Magistrates' Court heard how Mrs. Usher died after Hoganson had been taken into custody again, but a district judge ruled that the process had to continue with her statement as evidence.

Hoganson, who played a leading role in the 1987 Film Film, was one of the hundreds of prisoners who were released early in an attempt to reduce the overcrowding in prisons.

On Friday he was found guilty of mistreating Mrs. Usher and two charges for violating a street ban by going to her house on 11 September and sending her a letter from prison a week earlier.

    'Powerful blow'

The court heard that Hoganson was imprisoned in August for the mistreatment of Mrs Usher and the violation of a judicial order from 2023 that forbade him to contact her.

By the time he was convicted, he had already been in custody for most of his eighteen months.

In a statement from Mrs. Usher, read by prosecutor Lisa Callum, the two had had a relationship for about six years and that Hoganson 'struck me all the time'.

Mrs. Usher said that she had waited for her flat on 11 September when Hoganson ran towards her and “gave me a slap in the side of my face”.

“I have no injuries, but the blow was powerful,” she said.

“There was a lot of strength behind it.

“He screamed and roared and seemed very angry,” she said.

Mrs. Usher said she had called the police and Hoganson began to hit a electricity cabinet on the wall with his head.

    Removed from the court

Hoganson denied the violations and claimed that he had gone to the apartment building to pick up his possessions from a man who lived there.

When asked by Mrs. Callum why the man was not in court to confirm his story, Hoganson accused him of “having an affair” with Mrs. Usher while he was in prison.

He started screaming obscenities and was removed from the court.

Lawyer Mark Styles said that the suspect could “not process” the loss of Mrs. Usher because he had been in custody and his mental health had deteriorated.

Deputy district judge Natalie Wortley found Hoganson guilty of all three charges.

He will be convicted by the Newcastle Crown Court on 25 February.
