Hollywood star Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead next to their dog in their house in Santa Fe.
The office of Sante Fe County Sheriff said that the cause of death is being investigated, but they do not believe that cheating is currently a factor.
The 95-year-old received two Oscars and two BAFTAs during an acting career that spanded several decades for several decades, including the prize for best actor in 1972 for his role as detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in the French connection.
Hackman was also known for his roles such as Buck Barrow in Bonnie and Clyde and Schurk Lex Luthor in Superman.

He landed a further Academy Award in the best supporting actor category for his share in Western Unforgiven in 1992, directed by Clint Eastwood.
Hackman did not play in a film since 2004, when he played Monroe “Eagle” Cole in the Political Satire Welcome to Mooseport.
The American actor married Betsy in 1991, 63, a classic pianist.
A statement from the Santa Fe County Sheriff in New Mexico said there was an “active investigation” into death.
The police said: “We can confirm that both Gene Hackman and his wife died on Wednesday afternoon in their residence on Sunset Trail.
“This is an active study – however, we do not believe that false game was a factor.”
