A fire at 'dangerous speed' erupts on California's Otay Mountain

Another fire is raging in Southern California, igniting near San Diego on Thursday, sparking weeks of blazes across Southern California.

The Border 2 Fire was discovered around 2:30 PM PT in the Otay Mountain Wilderness Area, about 30 miles southeast of the city and just north of the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to Cal Fire, the fire had burned 566 acres and was at 0% containment as of 7:15 PM PT. The department said in an earlier update that the fire was “spreading dangerously.”

No evacuations have been ordered due to the Border 2 Fire, but Cal Fire said “there is a threat to critical communications infrastructure at the Otay Mountain Repeater Site.”

The Border 2 fire is one of two fires that started near San Diego on Thursday when the Gillman fire forced La Jolla residents to evacuate for a few hours. According to CalFire, the fire's forward progress was stopped at 3 acres.
