A 3-mile stretch of Loop 202 is closing this weekend. Here's what you need to know

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the eastbound lanes of Loop 202 in Chandler and Gilbert will be closed all weekend on Friday for further widening and improvements to the freeway.

ADOT announced that from 10 p.m. Friday, August 9, through 5 a.m. Monday, August 12, a three-mile stretch of eastbound Loop 202 will be closed between Loop 101 and Arizona Avenue.

The closure would clear the way for the start of a $200 million project that will add two lanes in each direction to the freeway between Loop 101 and Gilbert Road, and one additional lane between Gilbert Road and Val Vista Drive — improvements to a total of eight miles of Loop 202, ADOT said.

According to ADOT, bridges would also be widened and on- and off-ramps rebuilt within the next two and a half years.

According to ADOT, crews removed the top layer of ash during the first weekend of work, then began smoothing the road surface.

According to ADOT, funding for the project came from Maricopa County's voter-approved Proposition 400.
