If you want a taste of the foldable future, Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 4 is available on Amazon for one of the lowest prices we’ve seen. Oddly enough, you can get both the $1,799.99 256GB version and the $1,919.99 512GB model for $1,499.99. That works out to $300 off the base model and $420 off the 512GB version, which is clearly the one you want.
The Galaxy Fold 4 is Samsung’s flagship product and was launched just two months ago (are sales going well?). The Fold 4 folds into a smartphone-like device with a 6.2-inch, 120 Hz, 2316 × 904 outer OLED display and opens up into a hefty tablet with a 7.6-inch, 2176 × 1812, 120 Hz OLED screen. Inside is flagship-class hardware: a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, 12 GB RAM, 256 GB storage and a 4400 mAh battery with 25 W charging. The device is somehow water resistant and has an interesting camera below the display inside.
The phone comes with Android 12L, which has some nice additions for tablet-like devices like the Fold 4. The biggest addition is the taskbar at the bottom, which makes it easy to jump between apps. Samsung has the longest update plan in the Android business; you get four years of major OS updates and an extra year of security updates, but don’t be surprised if they arrive slowly.
It’s hard to recommend foldables too enthusiastically, as you’ll still find regular reports of the screens breaking right away for no reason. Users report that Samsung may or may not cover broken screens under warranty because it’s so easy to deny a claim by calling it “abuse.” Samsung charges $500 for a screen replacement if it denies your warranty. If you pay for Samsung Care+’s extended warranty ($3 per month for a mandatory 36 months, or $108) you can get a screen replacement for a $29 deductible. Buying a Fold still feels like a gamble , but at least the discount covers a lot of those extra costs.
