New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who has covered former President Donald Trump for decades, speculated that documents seized by the FBI in Mar-a-Lago last week could be “personally beneficial.”
Haberman, a New York Times reporter and CNN analyst, appeared on Tuesday’s episode of the “Hacks on Tap” podcast and discussed possible scenarios for why Trump was holding those documents.
She suggested that the former president could have kept the documents simply because he thought “something cool.”
“Another bucket is: He sees something personally beneficial — either because it’s something he can use to empower himself or it’s something he thinks will help him in his business or his personal brand,” Haberman added. .
“Not only is there a possibility that a foreign adversary could see these things by accident, there’s also the possibility that Trump could be — and I’m not saying this is the case for those listening, we don’t know, there’s a lot we don’t know, but one of the concerns is that Trump has business ties abroad,” she added.
Aside from the search warrant, which was leaked last Friday and subsequently unsealed, and which contained a vague list, it is unclear what was seized in Mar-a-Lago. The order listed 11 sets of classified documents, but the full extent of the contents is still unknown.
“I think there’s a concern that whatever he had might be of use to him,” she continued.
