Hundreds of pigs were released on Monday in one of the largest pieces of undeveloped country in England, the BBC reported.
The new forest is located in South England and covers an area of almost 220 square miles. It was founded by William the conqueror in 1079, and as the outlet indicated, some of his old traditions are still confirmed.
Among them, Pannage, a historical practice, a season and a legal right are offered to the owners of the pigs.
According to New Forest National Park, a National Park is located in and near the New Forest, released between 200 and 600 pigs every year. In the 1800s that number was as high as 6,000.
Pannage in the New Forest is a rare example of a kind of pre-industrial ecological stewardship that has been transferred to modern times unbroken.
The more and more people of the New Forest, individuals in charge of supervising the use of the country, initiated in the mid -September by a “heavy acorn crop”.
Pigs are released to graze on acorns, which are toxic to the freely rounded ponies and cattle in the forest, the entire season. They also erase the forest floor of chestnuts and beech mast.
The pigs are tagged and equipped with rings in their noses to minimize disruption caused by their root behavior, and any eligible common reimbursement pays a small fee for each pig to graze. More further noted that Pannage 'is still an important part of the Ecology of the New Forest'.
Pannage season “helps the livestock farming of the other New Forest -Vee”, because “pigs can safely eat acorns like a large part of their diet.”
On Instagram, New Forest Hotels (@Newforest Collection) shared a cute video of pigs on the first day of the Pannage season in 2025, with a detailed caption that emphasized its rich history.
“These smart pigs are the own clean -up team of nature, so that our beloved forest remains safe for all other animals,” the caption explained.
“It is actually the most British thing ever – the use of pigs such as environmental heroes,” the company continued, the sentence substantiated with a British Vlagemoji.
Although the Caption of the Hotelier was largely festive, New Forest -Hotels offered advice to tourists to ensure the Pannage season in 2025 smoothly.
The organization reminded visitors that “these curious pigs do not understand traffic rules” and repeated common guidelines for navigation areas where animals in the wild and people intersect. In recent years, local officials received reports from pigs that were hit by cars during the Pannage season.
“Don't forget to maintain a safe distance, to admire from far away and please drive extra carefully through the forest,” they warned before they encourage followers to post their “pig spotting photos” in the comments.
The Pannage season is expected to end on November 28, but furtherers indicated that the size of the glans could justify an extension.
